This Schubert performance marked the first time I truly dared to be radical with my interpretation. I stopped trying to imitate tradition and instead sought for something more vulnerable, personal, and alive within Schubert’s language. Each generation of artists should be allowed to rediscover old traditions anew.
Recorded live inside a children’s music school in Catalunya, this performance of Five Short Scenes for Piano became something unexpectedly special to me. The distant voices, footsteps, laughter, and movement surrounding the music created a living atmosphere behind the music, which seemed to unfold itself in real time.
The nerves fueling this performance were screaming, “Do you truly dare to stand behind your own interpretation?” This was one of the most nerve-racking performances I’ve ever given. And one of the most compassionate performance memory I look back on.
